I'm usually super-critical of these sorts of releases from OEMs, but for some reason, because it's Mazda, because it's the Miata, I believe every word.
Maybe that makes me naive, but I want to believe their decision-making process on this car is a pure as they make it out to be.

Agreed, I definitely felt they took the appropriate measures to get the car just right.

Give it time haha. I really think they are working on something special with the engine.

Like...trading it for an Ecoboost 2.0, with the 2.3 as a Mazdaspeed version?

If they are going to turbocharge anything, I want them to use the Euro 1.5L engine. This would keep weight down and still make for a good increase in power. A turbo 2.3 wouldn't be right for the car. I want the car to stay NA, but Im not a fan of the 2.0 as it is.

The 2.0 does 252/270 stock, and puts 250/320 to the wheels with a tune. A 1.5 liter isn't going to save much on weight (holes don't weigh anything, and the block isn't much smaller), but keeps the Miata in the "fun in the curves but..." category instead of letting it become a balanced all-around performer.
They've already captured the market of people interested enough in low & light to put up with dog slow highway and in-gear acceleration. Why not give enthusiasts an option that can also get out of its own way?

I definitely want them to make a faster version. I want the car to be balanced in regards to power, weight, etc. But I still want it to be a car that likes to rev, not torquey in the low-mid range just to fall flat at the higher rpms. And I do think that in 2015 the car needs to have more power. But its going to be a tough decision for them on which route to go with. Which 2.0 are you thinking of? The 2.0 in the ND is not making those figures.

Ecoboost 2.0 in the Focust ST. Ford and Mazda had a relationship before, and due to lack of resources Mazda is making attractive cars with decent suspensions, then ruining them with this Skyactiv, everything gets a wheezy 4-banger game plan.
Meanwhile Ford has a line of awesome engines but aside from the Focus won't put them in reasonably sized cars: the 2.7TT and 3.5TT aren't in the Mustang or Fusion, just the behemoths.
So, put the 2.0T in the Miata and 3S. Put the 2.3T in the Mazdaspeed Miata and an AWD MS3. Put the 2.3T in the 6S (preferably AWD), and the 2.7TT in an AWD MS6. That would push all 3 cars to the top of their classes.

yeah i dont get why mazda just went and stuck that lame 2.0 in everything. The MS miata should get the 2.3. They could probably just rework the 2.0 for the normal one. And i guess the next speed3 will have to be AWD to have a chance against the other cars in its class.
